B.A. in Music with Music Industry Emphasis

"With a volatile economy to look forward to after college, the Music Industry Emphasis seemed like the safest way to study music. It also provided a good overview of the wide range of careers in music. Perfect for someone who is unsure exactly what they will do to make a living, but know that music is in their future. This diversity has been my favorite part of my academic journey; to be able to understand and be a part of music from the composerís pencil, to the stage, to the recording studio, to the publisher's catalog, and beyond. My time so far has been a tour of the world of music with many open doors."

-Josiah Antill, Class of 2011

If you are interested in a career in the music industry, Chowan's Music Industry Emphasis can lead you on your way to exciting careers in:

  • Music Recording and Mastering
  • Music Publishing
  • Artist Management
  • Music in Broadcasting, Film, and Theatre

You will get first hand experience using music technology products such as Finale, Pro Tools, Sound Forge, MAX and Jitter. Students in our program have had opportunities to consult with organizations and institutions that are looking for sound system designs and installations.

Chowan is a member of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA), which gives our students exposure to national trends and the latest developments in the field. Also, Music Industry Day brings a music industry professional to campus each year to share his/her expertise with our students. Recent Music Industry Day Guests have included:

  • Ted Etheridge, Owner of Music Box Studio, Hamilton, NC
  • Michael Bollinger, Executive Director of the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, Suffolk, VA
  • Roger Ward, Owner of Ward Productions (Audio/Video Production and Event Management), Pinehurst, NC
  • James E. Green, Production Manager and Music Copy Editor at Hinshaw Music, Chapel Hill, NC

Near the completion of their course of study, Music Industry students participate in an Internship. You will get to spend 140 clock hours in a music-related business under the supervision of a music industry professional. Businesses in which our students have interned include radio stations, recording studios, and sound system design and installation firms.
