Chowan University in Northeastern North Carolina has been offering a quality Christian education since it was founded as a Baptist institute in 1848. We continue the proud traditions set by our forefathers through today to insure students from all walks of life are given an equal chance to succeed. Chowan welcomes students from across the country and across the globe. We strive to make good students everywhere GREAT, because at Chowan University, we have faith in your future.
The Chowan Challenge
We have made it a goal to take in those well-rounded students that other schools often overlook. Where other schools dismiss applicants for “less-than-perfect” scores and GPA’s, Chowan steps up to the challenge of embracing those who are usually in the most need of a positive education. We review our applicants on an individual basis and not a number scale, taking into account character, abilities, potential and more. We know a student is not just what is written in his transcript. We see the possibilities that lie within, and we drive them to find it within themselves, no matter what their background may be. Offering amazing scholarships and financial assistance, Chowan will work with any family to ensure a student’s educational future. Chowan’s small class sizes and our focus on individual attention make our school truly student-driven. With over 60 academic programs, more than 45 student clubs and organizations, and a new standing as a Division II NCAA competitor in 11 sports, Chowan has something special for everyone to enjoy.
The Chowan Christian
Chowan is a Christian school in words, truth and deeds where we concentrate on pure pasturing more than repetitive programming. Chowan applies Jesus’ tenant “Love your neighbor as yourself” throughout campus life. Some schools are like a youth camp where all the people are safe in their easy comfort zones, with similar perspectives repeated just like carbon copies. CU is more like that tough mission trip where you took the word with you and applied your faith to overcome any challenging situations you faced, building your faith stronger each day. CU students get great opportunities to develop spiritually through worship and service by leading revival teams, youth groups and rallies. The Christian Student Union hold weekly worships full of diverse music and praise, and travel for lay revivals and even disaster relief efforts. The popular student-led Instrument of Praise Gospel Choir brings revival to the campus and all over the Southeast by spreading God’s word through soulful songs. These opportunities and more help each individual student build their faith and their fellowship.
The Chowan Community
We follow Jesus’ words on and off the campus. Our Campus Ministry team provides an excellent space for grace where students can deepen their faith through a variety of fun programs and activities. The Campus Ministry team endorses mission service inside and outside the US, and coordinates several of our on-campus Christian organizations. CU incorporates the campus Habitat for Humanity chapter to fulfill God’s calling of helping neighbors near and far. This year, Habitat traveled to Pedricktown, New Jersey near Philadelphia on their Spring Break to build a home for a needy family. Last year, Campus Ministry helped the students travel to one of America’s poorest and roughest neighborhoods to help a small Christian Activity Center to become a beacon of hope in that dark region. Through their annual Chowan Cares Campaign, Campus Ministry got the whole campus involved in raising funds and awareness through a variety of acts of service geared to help people from the neighboring counties to neighboring continents.
Chowan provides ways for every student to succeed. Remember, at Chowan University, we have faith in your future.
