Psychology Department

Chowan's Psychology Department is unique from traditional undergraduate programs in psychology by offering:

  • Alcohol/Drug Studies leading to a North Carolina Certification in Addiction Counseling.
  • Preparation in counseling through role-playing and client assessment.
  • Participation in Group therapy class.
  • Hands-on activities in diagnosing, using the DSM-IV TR (Diagnostic Statistical Manual).
  • Practical experience in local mental health agencies.
  • Federal grant project “Prevention of Underage Drinking”: visit www.CUSOBER.com.

Our students, who have continued on to graduate school, report that these learning opportunities gave them a tremendous advantage in their graduate studies. Other students found that their knowledge and skills gave them an edge when applying for entry-level positions in the mental health field. If you intend to make psychology your major, you will need to work hard, but you will also find that we have fun and enjoy some exciting class activities!

We want you to find your passion. Psychology majors pursuing a B.S. degree can choose from several tracks - our Counseling/Applied Track, our Alcohol/Drug Studies Track and our Experimental Track. We also offer a B.A. degree in Psychology for students who prefer not to concentrate on counseling or research. Chowan’s Psychology Department will also include you in:

  • Peer Mentoring - Matching upper-class students with first year students for guidance and friendship.
  • Peer Counseling - Learning how to help your fellow students.
  • Psi Chi Honor Society - For students who achieve academic excellence.
  • Psychology Club - All majors and minors are encouraged to participate in activities.
  • CU SOBER Counseling Chat Line - Real time interaction with clients.
  • Discussion Groups – Join in dialogue and get-togethers at Dr. Peavler’s home (she lives just across the street from the campus).

When you become part of the Chowan University Psychology Department you will have a special place – a place to learn, to have fun, to grow emotionally & spiritually – a place to belong.
