Chowan University Masterworks Chorus and Orchestra
Sponsored by the Department of Music
Monday, April 18, 7:30 pm – Turner Auditorium

Under the direction of Dr. Gregory Parker, the Chowan University Masterworks Chorus and Orchestra will present a concert of revolutionary music featuring the Mass in Time of War by Joseph Haydn and The Testament of Freedom by Randall Thompson. Admission is free and the doors will open for seating at 7:00 pm.

Haydn composed the Mass in Time of War in 1796 as Napoleon was leading French troops in an invasion of Austria. This setting, also known as the "Paukenmesse" (Timpani Mass) because of the significant role that the timpani play in the work, becomes a prayer for victory over the French through the incorporation of timpani and trumpets in the normally tranquil Agnus Dei.

Although just 24 minutes in length, The Testament of Freedom has become an iconic musical expression of American patriotism. Randall Thompson composed the piece in honor of the 200th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's birth. The piece, featuring texts taken from Jefferson's writings, was premeired by the University of Virginia Glee Club on April 13, 1943 with Thompson accompanying at the piano. Its popularity led him to produce an SATB version and an orchestration of the work, which is the one that will be performed on this program.
